Hello, everyone, Couple of reactions to what’s been posted so far: 1. Not all research is published in journals. As many of the links in your posts show, other publishing models are available. And, guess what? They are used, at scale, by many research organisations, especially those outside academia. One problem with these ‘other publishing models’ (aka grey literature) is their exclusion from the main discovery services, like Scopus, WoS et al and the fact they are scattered about the internet. This is something I am trying to address with my new project, Policy Commons. Launched in 2021, Policy Commons now indexes more than 11 million informally published items from 15,000+ organisations from around the world, many in the global south. Since link rot/drift/disfunction is such a problem in this space (also shown by some of the links shared in your posts!), we’re on the point of launching a link-rot solution - at least for PDFs - in Policy Commons. 2. Discovery services. The reality is that most researchers rely on Scopus, WoS et al for their discovery needs. This makes it very hard for publishers/producers of grey lit to reach researchers, especially in academia. The flip is also true, researchers find it very hard to uncover grey lit, so they’re missing out on a lot of potentially valuable content. To try and bridge this gap, we’ve just enabled the big discovery services to include content we’ve indexed. To date, only Google Scholar is actually doing this - we’re hopeful that the others will do so soon and are encouraging those who buy these services to nudge them to do so! Finally, in a fit of enthusiasm for Rick’s initiative, and with his blessing, I’ve started to capture all the links to grey lit items included in your posts and am bringing them together in a Policy Commons List: https://policycommons.net/lists/22092/open-cafe/ <https://policycommons.net/lists/22092/open-cafe/>. Over time, this will create a database of articles, documents, postings, projects etc in open scholarship. Since it will have been curated by the Open Café community, it should be pretty good (!) and I hope it proves useful (and do let me know if I get anything wrong!)
