Thanks, Tom.

I think Frontiers will take enough criticism without me piling on, and the benefit of a space like the Open Café is that it hopefully doesn't attract that behaviour. My concern is broader, it affects the lack of trust in AI to be beneficial in research publications and it adds to the erosion of trust in scholarly publishing that is already under pressure.

When many of us are working to build capacity and enable scholar-led research across the LMICs, episodes such as this raise inevitable questions about the integrity and efficacy of the system as a whole. If we're not having to spend an inordinate amount of time advocating for research outputs from the LMICs we now have to double-down and advocate for peer review and its subsequent quality due to high-visibility issues like this, and other recent events such as Wiley (the artists formerly known as Hindawi) retractions as they cut through into mainstream media and social media.

The nature of the images in this article plays right into the hands of social media and I've seen reports in outlets that would normally not go within a 1,000 miles of a research article. None of it adds to how research is perceived beyond the corridors in academia and despite all the words and white papers produced in an attempt to sure up confidence (and share prices) we all need to do better. As a community.

Mark
