Re the discussion of Journalology Issue #64 - questions arising... How does this all fit into Open Science relevant to this listserv?
Glenn Hampson's post mentions Subscribe to Open and the prospect of individual subscribers support --- that's a very interesting idea - where institutions, society/non-profit pubishers, and individuals can share the costs / invest in open access without APCs. Membership models could include an optional donation in lieu of APCs ... (not withstanding more havoc with system integrations required of course).
Also while the #64 lead story was the Purpose Led Publisher announcement, in case you missed it, also in #64- By February, European Mathematical Society reached its goals for Subscribe to Open for 2024 and AIP (one of the three publishers) has also announced it's piloting a Subscribe to Open offering for two of its journals.
I agree with Alice Meadows that it does bear repeating that not-for-profit publishers can be differentiated by how they support their community and offer professional growth opportunities in ways that commercial publishers can't. American Physiological Society started an author campaign "publish with a purpose" in 2019, so that's 5 years in...
Value of professional organizations and membership - my primary professional association is Society for Scholarly Publishing and my concern about their fiscal well-being is in relationship to demonstrating responsible leadership/governance in the management of compensation levels, reserves (nod to Tasha), and investment/support of initiatives that are community led and prioritized with input/support from membership - with a nod to every org conducting member surveys. I feel fortunate to participate and that's my main reason for membership (and full disclosure serve on the membership committee)...
By the way for SSP members here: the 2024 SSP Member survey is currently open - if you havent yet taken it! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/D9JFK9B
